An old-fashioned family Christmas can be a memorable and very enjoyable holiday. If you have never planned such an event, there are a number of things that you can do to help your family to enjoy Christmas as it was decades ago. An old-fashioned Christmas can be fun and inexpensive. The main idea is to make your decorations and other items from hand out of things that you have around the house. You may not have to actually purchase anything and you can get your entire family involved in the festivities.
When you think about a traditional Christmas, you may think about candy canes, homemade Christmas cookies and popcorn and cranberries adorning your tree. You can easily make a strand of popcorn and cranberries using a standard needle and thread and older children will love threading the garland for your decorating. Decorating with cookies is also traditional. Simply purchase Christmas cookie cutters if you do not have any and make a batch of sugar cookies. Cookie cutters can also be used to adorn your dining room table as napkin holders or you can simply hang the cookie cutters directly on your Christmas tree.
Sleigh bells are a must for a traditional family Christmas. You can find these at most craft stores or any department store that sells Christmas decorations. Grab a few sets, they are very inexpensive. Hang them on your front door or put them directly on your Christmas tree. The sound of sleigh bells ringing will instantly give everyone who enters your home the feeling of a down-home country Christmas.
You will also want the scent of Christmas surrounding your home. Fresh baked cookies and nut breads are synonymous with a traditional Christmas. Pick up various spices such as bayberry, evergreen and cinnamon. You can hang cinnamon sticks on your Christmas tree for decoration and for smell as well. Place candles scented with peppermint, bayberry or mulberry in your windows and go outside and find fir branches for decorating hallways and doorways. Fir branches adorned with pinecones and tied together with a red velvet bow are inexpensive and make beautiful traditional decorations for any room in your home.
The key to an old-fashioned family Christmas is family. Spend time with your family making decorations, baking and simply enjoying each other’s company. If you are planning to invite people to your home for the holidays, make sure that they know you are decorating in the traditional style. You may even want to make presents for neighbors and friends. You can put together baskets of baked goodies to pass out to family and friends. Find special things to do that will create lasting memories for your children. Enjoying the holiday season does not have to be stressful or expensive. You can simply load your family into the car and drive around your neighborhood looking at the Christmas lights or pop in a Christmas music CD and sit around making popcorn garland and other homemade decorations. Your children will enjoy the time spend with family and you will create memories that will last a lifetime. You may even inspire your children to carry on their traditional family Christmas when they grow up and have their own families.
