Joy of Celebrating Un-Traditional Holidays Print
Family Fun - Holiday Fun

While there are a lot of families who give each other Valentine's Day cards and dress up in costumes for Halloween, what do these families do between these holidays?  Of course, these families get really busy with other things throughout the year but it is still important to have fun and create lasting memories together.  With this in mind, it is a good idea to spend some time celebrating some untraditional holidays, such as:

  • National Family Fun Week (May 1 through May 7).  Why not do something fun this week?  You could have a potluck dinner with friends, go on a scavenger hunt or do something that you would not normally do.
  • Superman's birthday (June 1).  Eat some green Jell-O (Kryptonite) while reading Superman comic books.
  • National Barefoot Sunday (June 1).  There are more than three million people around the world who do not have shoes.  Take some time to remember these people by walking around barefoot for a day.  You can also donate shoes to those who do not have them by going to Soles4Souls.org.
  • Be A Kid Day (July 8).  Everyone loves being a kid and now here is your chance to be a kid for a day.  This is your day to get silly.  Tell knock knock jokes.  Have adults dress in overalls and pigtails for dinner.
  • National Limerick Day (May 12).  Have each family member write a limerick.  You can then spend the evening reading limericks together in a coffee house like atmosphere where hot chocolate is the drink of choice.  After the evening is over you can hang everyone's limericks on the refrigerator for everyone to remember for a long time to come.

There is no end to the untraditional holidays that you can celebrate.  You can find lists of these holidays available online.  Some of the other holidays that you may enjoy celebrating with your family include:

  • Donald Duck's birthday (June 9)
  • National Avoid Boredom Week (the third week in July)
  • National Mustard Day (the first Saturday in August)

As you can clearly see, there are a lot more holidays than just the main ones that everyone celebrates (Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, Halloween and New Year's Eve).  In fact, there is probably a holiday for anything and everything that you could possibly imagine.  There are many ways to really enjoy such holidays.  So, why not take advantage of the “ordinary” by celebrating untraditional holidays with your family?
