Who doesn’t want to save money on groceries and other regular purchases?  Anyone who’s ever pushed a shopping cart down grocery aisles would definitely like to see better results in both quality and quantity from the money they spend.  While the price of consumer goods will likely continue to rise as they always have year after year, there are things you can do to ensure that you can get the most value with your money.

1. Buy in bulk

If you use non-perishable items from toothpastes to soap, you can buy in bulk and save a lot of money.  Apart from discounts often afforded to anyone who buys in large quantities, you will also be spared from future price hikes, regardless of their reason.  Perishables like meat and bread can also be acquired in larger quantities to avoid multiple grocery trips. Just store them in a freezer to avoid spoiling for later use.

The best times to buy in bulk are right after holiday seasons.  People go on spending sprees during holidays then hold tight to whatever money they have left after the splurge.  To reel them back in the stores and keep business running, merchants frequently offer big discounts.  Use the remarkable markdowns to secure bulk purchases and save even more money.

2. Scan the shelves top to bottom

Most supermarkets stock the most expensive items at eye-level.  They offer the biggest margin of profit so they feature them prominently.  Make sure to look at the lower-shelves to be certain that you’re not missing on better deals.

Don’t just buy the featured “on sale” items in front of the store either.  The companies distributing those brands actually pay for that placement.  It’s highly likely you can get better deals elsewhere in the store.

3. Avoid impulse buys

Avoid grocery shopping on an empty stomach.  It leads to a lot of impulse purchases, you otherwise wouldn’t need.  It also helps to do some pre-shopping planning and have a prepared list beforehand.  Having a rundown of all the things you need to buy should help you avoid forgetting any of them.  Additionally, it keeps you from picking up stuff that you could probably do without.

4. Convenience foods

Stay away from convenience foods.  They are convenient for a reason – they’re heavily processed, preservative-infused and more expensive than cooking a similar dish using regular ingredients.  Anything with the words “instant”, “microwave” or “no-cook” will normally fall in this category.

5. Sweets and snacks

Get creative when choosing snacks for your kids – sweets and chips are plenty expensive compared to healthier items that can be equally as fun.  Instead of candy and tortilla, opt for fresh fruits, peanut butter and popcorn.  Combine them to make tasty munchies that the kids can enjoy just as much.

Shop Till You Drop

There’s a certain allure to shopping till you drop.  However, there’s no financial sense in it.  If you’re looking to get your money matters in order, there is no better first step than shopping smart – getting everything you need without breaking the budget.
