Decorating your home does not have to cost a fortune. If you think that you cannot afford to make your home beautiful, think again. There are a number of ways that you get achieve the look that you want without breaking the bank. You simply have to decide what changes you want to make to your existing décor and then learn inexpensive ways to make these changes.

Paint is an excellent way to completely change the look of a room and can be purchased for much less than you may think. In fact, painting is probably the least expensive option when it comes to dramatically changing the look of a room. You can find many paint brands for just a few dollars per gallon and depending on the size of your room, you may only need a gallon or two for a complete transformation. Check with your local hardware or home improvement store for returns. These are paint gallons that were never picked up, normally custom made colors. You can get these fairly cheaply and if you do the painting yourself, you can likely change your room for less than $50.

You can call in the help of family and friends to help you to save money as well. While everyone does not have the knowledge or skill to do a major remodeling job, most can paint, lay tile and help you to install carpeting. Call on people who can help you to tear down wallpaper or paneling or assemble furniture. It could cost you as little as a cold drink or a light lunch and you will get a lot of remodeling accomplished in just one day.

Shop for new furnishings, curtains and other necessities at second-hand stores. Consignment shops, thrift stores and yard sales present the perfect opportunity to find beautiful furnishings for practically nothing. Be sure that you choose furniture that is sturdy and look at yard sales for curtains, throw pillows and other accessories that will help you to really change the look of your room. You may find complete bedding sets at online auctions or garage sales for just a percentage of what they cost new. Be sure to look for stains, rips and tears. You do not want to purchase items that you will have to simply throw away or repair before you can use them.

Stock items can help you to save a fortune when remodeling or decorating. Instead of choosing custom items which can cost up to twice as much, choose items that are in stock. If you are not in a huge hurry to get your decorating done, you can wait on sales and discounts at many stores. When you shop, ask a sales associate if any of the items that you need will go on sale in the near future. If you are decorating close to the end of a season, many items will be put on clearance to make way for the upcoming season. Be sure to check your local paper and flyers for anything that may be on sale that can help you with your decorating.

If you own a sewing machine, you can sew your own linens and throw pillows easily. You can simply take old sheets that have attractive patterns and turn them into curtains or pillows as well as slipcovers for your furniture. You will find that fabric is much cheaper than purchasing all of the linens that you need so pick up some inexpensive fabric and begin making your own decorating accents. You will not only save money this way, but you will also feel proud of your accomplishment.
You do not have to buy new items just to change your current décor. You can re-stain furniture to give it a fresh, new look or paint over dressers and other wooden items with white pain to give them a distressed look. Do a bit of research into do-it-yourself decorating and find ideas that you can use on the furnishings that you already own.
