Most women know that shampoos are supposed to remove the dirt, dead skin cells and excess oils from your hair. Women grow up knowing which shampoos are best at doing their job, but most have no idea how to actually choose the better shampoo. In addition, contrary to popular opinion, many women do not know the correct way to shampoo their hair in order to keep it healthy.

First, choosing a shampoo is not brain surgery. Unless you have a really dirty head or have a lot of chemical buildup from your hair sprays, gels, etc., then you really only need to shampoo your hair once each washing. You should also be sure to rinse well after this shampooing. So, which are the better shampoos for lathering up? Although there are many cleansers used in different shampoos, most contain sodium or ammonium laureth sulfate and TEA-lauryl sulfate. These chemicals can often be harsh and will irritate an already sensitive scalp. Most shampoos also contain conditioning agents such as humectants, silicone and protein, which stay in your hair until you wash it out the next time that you shampoo. Knowing the many chemicals in your shampoo can help you to choose a brand that is healthier and causes less damage to your locks overall.

While you are deciding which shampoo to use to make your hair healthier, there are many home remedies that you can use for various hair problems that are made from natural ingredients. These homemade products can help you to ensure that your hair stays healthy and less weighed down by chemicals and additives.

Dandruff is a big problem for many women. Dandruff shampoos and treatments, while they are typically helpful, are filled with chemicals that will remove the dandruff but may be too harsh on your hair. Consider making your own dandruff mask with Thyme. Thyme Water mask removes dandruff and helps to fight bacteria naturally.

You will need just 7 tablespoons of dried thyme and 2 cups of water. Boil the thyme in water for 10 minutes and then strain it. Apply this mask to your clean, damp hair and leave it in. You will soon be wearing black again without the worries of those annoying white flakes.

For shinier hair, you can use the natural acids that are found in strawberries and get that million dollar, glamorous look in just minutes. Take 8 strawberries and 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise. Mash together with a fork until blended completely. Apply this deep conditioning mask to your damp, clean hair and then cover with a shower cap and a warm towel. Rinse with a natural shampoo and conditioner and your hair will come out soft, manageable and with a shine that you simply cannot get with chemical conditioners.

There are many other natural, at-home remedies for what ails your hair. Yogurt makes an excellent conditioner and it conditioners your hair without adding oils, great for those with oily hair. Vodka can also be used for hair. The natural alcohol in vodka cleans oils and buildup on your scalp, giving your hair a fresh, clean look.

Other natural remedies can be found by simply looking. There are many things that you may already have in your kitchen or bathroom that can help you to keep your hair healthy, without adding harmful chemicals, which tend to leave buildup and can damage your hair over time.  The next time you need to treat your hair or scalp, consider looking through your kitchen before you head to the beauty parlor. Chances are that your hair will look much healthier and beautiful and you will save money while doing it.
