Health - Stress

The age-old question for women seems to be “how do I balance work and the rest of my life?” Whether you are married with children, single or even nearing retirement, it can be difficult to find a balance between work and life that works. There is simply no one way to define a balanced life. Different people will have different reactions to combining their careers, spouses, children, friends and activities.

What you first need to do is to find a solution that allows you to make the most of your time, whatever aspect of life you are currently involved in doing. Many of the strategies that you use at work, such as organization, planning and even delegation, can help you to find a good, healthy balance between your personal and professional lives.

One way to maintain this balance is to seek help when you need it. Build up a good support network. If you have children, let them be involved in daily activities. Friends, co-workers and neighbors can also help in the event of an emergency. Always have an emergency plan in place, complete with names and phone numbers of your support network so that if an emergency does happen, you have much more time to deal with it.

Next, you should rid yourself of any guilt. If you are a working mother, do not allow yourself to feel guilty over working. If you are often required to miss get-togethers due to work, health, family or other issues, then so be it. Never let yourself be consumed by guilt. Make your decisions and accept them for what they are. Dwelling over guilty feelings will only take time away from your life that is better spent somewhere else.

Be sure to set limits for yourself and stick to them. Boundaries are an excellent way to keep your life organized and balanced. Decide what is acceptable and what is unacceptable behavior from the people around you. Set these boundaries and stick with them. Setting limits will help you to define how you take control of your time and space and will allow you the time that you need to get in touch with your feelings. If you do not set boundaries, it will be very difficult to control your own time. Without these boundaries, you may find that it is difficult to tell people “no” when you really do not have the time or mental capacity to tell them “yes“.

Getting organized is the number one way to create a balance between your work and personal life. You need to set goals and priorities and do whatever it takes to see these goals accomplished. If you have the chance, then delegate responsibilities to someone else. Just keep in mind that when you delegate a responsibility, it is no longer yours. Be sure to let go of it when you hand it off to someone else. Keeping a calendar that combines your work and personal appointments and responsibilities is an excellent way to keep your life organized and to create more free time for yourself, which is vitally important in the overall scheme of things. Find ways to relax and to minimize stress.

Finally, keep the different aspects of your life in perspective. Set your list of priorities and do not let anyone make you feel guilty for the path that you have chosen. Creating harmony in life will help you to feel better and be healthier so that the time you are spending with family and friends is truly quality time. There is no one way for everyone to maintain a balanced life. Each woman must choose her own path and make her own personal decision on how to combine the different aspects of life into one harmonious begin. Keeping things in perspective is a good start and can lead to an overall feeling of balance in life that will help you to maximize all areas of your life to the fullest.
