Teaching your child about good nutrition and healthy eating is important and should begin at an early age. The childhood obesity rate in America is higher than it has ever been and many children who suffer from obesity will have this problem throughout most of their lives. Overcoming childhood obesity begins with parents who teach their children healthy eating habits. Influencing your child’s eating habits can begin as early as infant-hood and will stay with them for the remainder of their lives. Children develop lifelong habits early in life. This is why it is important to begin teaching them about nutrition as early as possible.

The most important thing that you can do to help teach your child good nutrition is to practice what you preach. You can set a good example for your children by eating healthy yourself. Resist the urge to snack on junk food and always make sure that your child has access to healthy foods. You can begin searching for healthier ways to prepare their favorite foods and ensure that you always have plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables on hand for snacks. Try to incorporate all of the major food groups into your daily menus and offer your children a variety of foods from each group. Limit the number of sweets that your child has access to. If you stock your home with junk food then your child is going to eat it. Limiting the amount of junk food that you have in your home will teach your child healthy eating habits and ensure that you remain healthy as well.

Children should be encouraged to be active beginning at an early age. Most children who simply lounge around all day watching television or playing video games tend to have a higher risk of obesity. Get your child moving daily and encourage them to play outdoors or when weather is not permitting, allow them some free play within the home. It is recommended that you put limits on the amount of time that your child watches television or plays video games or other stationary games per day. These limits encourage your child to play outside and get plenty of physical exercise.

Establishing good eating habits and regular exercise habits in your child is something that will remain with them forever. Your child will have fewer health problems when they get older and your entire family will be much healthier. Try some new recipes and if your child is old enough, allow him or her to help you to prepare new, healthier foods. This will encourage your children to choose healthier foods and they will enjoy helping you in the kitchen while you prepare their healthy meals.

Eating out can also be healthy. Many fast-food restaurants now offer healthier choices such as white meat chicken and apple wedges as opposed to burgers and fries. Encourage your children to drink milk and water as opposed to soda and Kool-Aid. Reducing the overall amount of sugar in their diets is recommended and will help to protect them from Type 2 diabetes as they get older.

You do not have to be a certified dietician to teach your child about nutrition. Simply show them that eating healthy has a number of benefits and healthy foods can be very delicious. Allow them to try new foods and don’t get discouraged if they do not like every single vegetable that they eat. They will develop their own tastes and chances are that they will prefer some vegetables over others. Simply make healthier choices yourself and your child will follow in your footsteps.
