Soothing Crying Babies Print
Parenting - Infant/Toddlers

There are three things a baby knows how to do, eat, sleep and cry. The crying of a newborn is the most heartbreaking sound you may have ever heard.  Babies cry for many reasons, let’s examine the reasons a baby any cry and what you can do to soothe and comfort them. When a baby comes homes home from the hospital, they will sleep at least 18 hours a day. As babies get older by the week, they will stay up and are more alert which in turn gives them more to cry and fuss over.

One reason why your baby may cry is very simple and that reason is that they want to be changed. Most babies will not tolerate a wet or waste diaper. They will cry almost immediately and that is why you will also go through at least 10 to 12 diapers a day. If that is the reason why the baby is crying then you relatively got away easy.

Another reason why babies cry is they are hungry; babies eat about every 3 to 4 hours. Sometimes they will sleep a bit longer but they are hungry then they will let you know. It is best to keep a bottle ready for them as close to the time that you know you are going to be feed the baby. This will become easier as you set your babies schedule. Babies have a distinct cry for everything that they need. You have to listen and really pay attention to those cries. It could make not only your life easier but your baby’s life easier as well.

The third most popular reason why babies cry is that they want to be held. Babies need as much love and attention as you can give them. They need to feel comfortable and safe and they will cry to let you know that they need that. So simply scoop up your little one and rock them gently until they fall asleep. Remember that a sleeping baby does not mean that you cannot hold them. Babies can feel you next to them and they may sleep more soundly if they know that you are right there.

Believe it or not, a baby can tell you if they are hot or cold. If a baby is too cold then they will cry to let you know. The same will happen if they are too warm. This is a cry that you will have to learn, you may think that all babies’ cries sound the same and in the beginning they will. But believe me the more experience you are getting as a parent you will soon realize that that you can tell when they are hungry and when they are wet.

A baby who is becoming more alert and more active will also want and need more rest. When you have a newborn and you are showing them off for the first time, the baby can get tired from over stimulation. At this time, the baby will cry, it will not sound like a hunger cry but it will be a more intense cry. Remember crying is the only way a baby can express themselves. Listening is very important to the baby and the mom. You may not get it right away but keep in mind that a baby can become over stimulated just as a child or adult can. If there are too many people around or maybe too much activity in one day can cause a baby to get frustrated and they will let you know.

Colic is another reason for the baby to cry. There really is no mistaking a colic cry from say a hunger cry. This cry is very heartbreaking for a new mom. Colic is gas that accumulates in the belly. You can try gas drops but they may not always work. The colic cry is a cry of pain, the cry is loud and it is intense. You want to cry yourself because there really is not all that much that you can do. You can try rocking the baby or placing the baby in a bouncer or a baby swing. This may calm the baby down as well. You can try a warm bath that can soothe the baby too.

When it comes to colic, it really is a hit and miss. You can try many different avenues before you can find a way that you can at least lessen the pain the baby is going through. Colic is very common and usually lasts from about 3 months to about 5. Every baby is different, some babies will cry for two weeks and others will cry for the entire 5 months.

There are many reasons why a baby will cry and there are also many different ways to soothe a crying baby. Rocking your baby is a great way to help soothe the baby. Some babies like to be swaddled so try wrapping the baby in a blanket and keep them warm. Try singing them a lullaby or softly hum a soft tune.  You can also try performing a baby massage with baby oil. A warm bath is a great way to soothe the baby as well.

You can try using a pacifier, sometimes babies like to have something to suck on. If you don’t have pacifiers then try a clean finger. The babies need to suck and it is called Comfort Sucking. Try to keep a clean pacifier at all times. Babies are very needy and they cannot communicate so crying is the only way they can let you know what they need.

It can also be hard on you as a new mom. Step back and take a deep breath, if someone else is in the home they see if you can take a break. Don’t feel bad if you need to step away for a minute or two. That does not mean that you love your baby any less. Caring for a baby can be overwhelming and you need to take a break sometimes for the good of the baby and for you.
