Most parents have heard of peer pressure and many cringe at the thought of what their teenager may be facing with regards to influence from friends. Peer pressure can have negative consequences but it can also have positive ones. It can be very difficult for a parent to determine which influences are positive and which ones are negative, particularly since your teenager may not talk to you as you would like. During the teenage years, your child will be growing into his or her own person and may take advice from friends over advice from you. This can be very disheartening to a parent but understanding your child and what he or she is dealing with can often help. There are a number of ways that you can help your child to deal with peer pressure and help her to determine whether these influences are positive or negative.

Having the first discussion with your daughter about her impending menstrual cycle may seem awkward at first. On average, most girls have their first menstrual periods before age 12, although this can vary from around 10 or so to 16 or older. Your daughter will get many of her genes from you which may help to determine when she will start her menstrual cycle. If you began early, then she could very well begin early. It is important to discuss this with her before she gets her first period.

Many parents dread talking to their children about sex and don’t think for one moment that your child does not also dread it. Talking about sex to a teenager or pre-teen can be uncomfortable and awkward but protecting your child is important. You may actually be surprised at what your child thinks about sex.
