Dating can be both an exciting and difficult time. Add to that the research done recently that states one-third of the people who use online dating services are actually married and the whole online dating process can become quite frustrating. Women are typically more likely to run into a married man during their online dating experiences. While there really is no sure-fire method of ensuring that your online beau is not already taken, there are red flags that you should look for when you enter the online dating site.

One of the first things that you should look for is a picture. Most married men will not want their picture displayed on the internet for fears that someone they know may see them. Instead of posting an online picture they may choose to email you one instead. This is normally the first red flag that you should note about anyone you are talking to online.

Another thing to look for is his response time. If his responses to your messages come in irregular or erratic intervals then this could signal that he has other “responsibilities”. Of course he could always assure you that his job is the reason for this irregularity so this is one of those times when you should heed other warning signs or use your own intuition.

If he requests your phone number but refuses to reciprocate that could also mean that he has something to hide from you. Most single men will freely give their number to someone that they have been talking for a while. If after a comfortable period of time he requests your phone number but does not give you his then you may have something to suspect him of. Although he may tell you that he prefers to be the one making the calls, he should at least offer you a cell phone number to establish that credibility between you. Be very careful however if his cell phone number is the only number that he will relinquish. This often hints to married men as well. If he offers you his home number then you can be fairly confident that he is not hiding anything in his closets (or his wife’s closet).

If you do give him your number, be sure to note the regularity of his calls. If he calls at the exact same time such as late in the evenings every day, then you should notice that red flag. Married men who work late at night often call women during break periods. Keep in mind that single men can basically call you anytime they want but married men must first adhere to their home schedule, finding time for you only when it is convenient.

One of the major red flags that you should take not of is whether or not he will share his last name with you. Of course if you have just met him then he may simply be protecting himself as you should do as well. If however, you have been speaking with this man for several weeks, particularly if you are having phone conversations as well as online contact, and he still refuses to divulge his full name then you could be headed for trouble.

Of course there are those men who will use aliases so again this is a time when you should use your own intuition and pay attention to other warning signs as well. Chances are that if he is hitting four out of five warning signs then you can be fairly sure that he is married.

Other warning signs that you should look for are whether or not he will give you any information about his hometown, upbringing and family. If this is someone that you have been involved with for some time and he continues to prolong the meeting between you and his family then you should definitely consider the possibility of a hidden wife. Ultimately there is no real method of determining whether or not your online man has an offline wife. Use your intuition and be very careful about divulging any personal information unless you are completely positive that this man is single and safe.
