Choosing the Right Divorce Lawyer Print
Relationship - Divorce

Sadly, half of all marriage in the United States will end in a divorce. This is a very sad but true statistic. A divorce can be a very emotionally charged experience and can end up contested. Finding the right divorce attorney is critical if you want to protect yourself and ensure that your settlement is fair. An experienced attorney can help you to determine how to properly divide your property and assets as well as how to set child support and spousal support payments. Choosing a good attorney may seem difficult and takes some consideration.

You should understand that laws pertaining to divorce are different from state to state. You will need to find a divorce attorney in your local area if possible to ensure that your case is handled properly. Since divorces in the United States are fairly common today, you may know someone who has gone through a divorce and can recommend on to you. Speak with friends and family as well as neighbors and coworkers to see if anyone has a recommendation. You can also visit the courthouse in your region and watch a few attorneys to gauge how they handle their divorce cases. Of course, this may take some time and if you do not have the time to do this, then simply choosing based on recommendations is a good alternative.

Be sure that you do your research. I will also look into pursuing legal advice to determine the most appropriate course of action. You want the person who is representing you to be worthy of your trust, not to mention your money. Your attorney should be on your side throughout your divorce proceedings. You want to be certain that everything checks out before you head to your divorce in court. Make sure that you are not limiting your choices. It is a good idea to choose three to five different attorneys to research. Narrow down your search by the research that you are doing. You can even interview your attorneys to see which one puts you at ease and makes you feel most comfortable. Ask plenty of questions and ensure that you are choosing someone who has experience with divorce cases similar to yours. For instance, if you have children then you want an attorney with experience in child custody and child support cases.

Always ensure that you have a written agreement with any attorney. You should never pay an attorney based on an oral agreement. Get everything in writing to ensure that there are no surprises or misunderstandings later. You could find yourself paying much more than you anticipated if you do not get your contract in writing. Read your papers carefully and ensure that your fees or the retainer is included in the agreement and that the terms are outlined and you understand them.

Ask for references. A qualified and experienced attorney will have references available upon request. Ask the attorney that you decide on to provide you with references to ensure that their qualifications are accurate. There are a number of other ways that you can help to determine which attorney is the best for you, but this is a general idea of what you should do to protect yourself. Choose an attorney with experience and one that you feel comfortable with. A divorce is going to be hard enough to go through. You should have an attorney that can help to make the process a bit easier.
