It’s always a good idea to create an XML sitemap and submit it to Google via their Webmaster Tools every time you create a site or blog. Sitemaps help Google find and index all of the pages on your site. They just help make Google’s crawl of your site go smoother.

Creating a sitemap from scratch can be extremely tricky, especially if your site has a lot of pages. It could take hours or even days to do it by hand if your site has hundreds or thousands of articles! Instead, you should use software to generate it.
If you have a WordPress blog, you can create a sitemap using the Google XML Sitemaps plugin: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/google-sitemap-generator/
If you have a static HTML site, you can use a free online tool that will crawl your site and generate a sitemap, or you can download software to do it. I don’t recommend the online tools, because they put you into a queue with thousands of other people, and it can take many hours to generate your sitemap. Instead, I recommend downloading software to create your sitemap.
There is a good free tool for generating sitemaps here: http://wonderwebware.com/sitemap-generator/
This program is available for PC/Windows. I’m not personally familiar with sitemap software for Mac, but I have heard it is available.
You should only have a maximum of 50,000 pages per sitemap document. Some generators limit this to 25,000, and a few free online generators even limit it to 500. Google will not follow more than a certain number of links per document, so it’s best to limit this to 50,000 or less per page, and a sitemap must be smaller than 10mb in size. You can have more than 50,000 pages in a single document if the site is under 10mb, but Google will ignore them.
