Choosing a name for your home business may take a bit of time and consideration. The most successful business names are those that draw in customers. This simply means that the name you choose should let people know what your business entails and prompt them to buy your products or use your services. This is not nearly as difficult as it sounds and you can choose the perfect name for your home business if you simply keep a few things in mind.
The first thing that you have to keep in mind is how memorable your business name is. You need to make it easy to spell and in the case of online presence, it should be very easy to remember. People are not going to be able to remember “Janet’s Best Dog Grooming Services in Houston, Texas”. They are much more likely to remember something like “Janet’s Canine Cuts”. See the difference? You want something catchy that gives your customers an overview of what your business is all about but you also need to keep it short and sweet if you expect people to be able to remember you.
Your business name should have both a literal meaning and an emotional meaning. You want people to think positive things when they hear your business name. Think about all the quaint little cafes that you have seen over the years. How many of those had the word “Mom” in the title? Mom is a positive word. People see that word and instantly think positive thoughts. When choosing your business name you want to be certain that your name includes positive connotations. Choose a name that explains your business in a positive light. For instance, “Janet’s Best Canine Cuts”. Best is a word with a positive meaning. Don’t forget to include a bit of what you do in your business as well. You need to ensure that people know why they need to contact you. Think about most businesses that you know of in your local area. Landscaping businesses normally have the word “landscaping” in their business names. The same rings true for discount furniture stores and hairdressers. Including this information is probably easier than it sounds. It will also make it easier for your customers to find you in phone books and other directories.
Keep it short and sweet. This is particularly important for websites. You want your customers to be able to remember the name and pass your information along to their friends and family. Dot coms are particularly more memorable when they are short. People are simply not going to remember to include fifteen words when typing in a URL. If you can keep your business name down to just one or two words, you will be much better off and people will remember you much more easily.
Finally, when designing your business logo, either online or offline, think about the colors that you will be using. Colors will say a lot about your business name and should be considered when choosing the name that will represent you. For instance, you do not want to use shades of pink if you are planning to sell men’s power tools. Alternatively, you would not want to use browns and blacks to sell women’s fashion or fragrances. Make sure that your name and colors match well. Get some help from your family and friends. Make a list of two or three names that you are considering and ask your friends and family to help you to choose the most memorable one. This helps you to include them in your choice and gives you an unbiased opinion about which name best suits your home business.
