Working at home can be wonderful, particularly when you share this time with your spouse. Unfortunately, working with your spouse can be difficult under the most normal circumstances and even more so when you both work from a home office. You may find yourself thinking that you can no longer share your home and each other’s company 24/7. For many couples who work together, spending too much time with one another can quickly get the best of them. You may find your spouse getting on your last nerve and wonder what in the world you were thinking. Fortunately, there is a fix. There are ways that you can ensure that your marriage stays strong while you share your home workspace.

Try to keep your workspaces separate. This can be a completely separate office or at least separate desks. You may even want to try working at different times of the day. Get a laptop and retire to the dining room for work while your spouse enjoys the home office. Make a work schedule and be sure that you both stick to this schedule. A work schedule keeps you organized and ensures that all tasks get completed. You may be tempted to run errands together and end up enjoying long lunches and visitations with friends and/or family. Make sure that you are not putting off work just to run away together. Make a schedule and take the time to get your work done before you take off together, or alone for that matter.

One thing that gets to people who work from home is being at home all the time. While this may have been your reason for working from home in the first place, you do need to get out once in a while. Take a break and at least go outside and walk around your home. Run errands or just move away from your desk and take a break. This helps to lower your stress levels which will help you significantly when your spouse begins to get in your way while working. If you work on the phone or make calls regularly, invest in a noise canceling headset. These come in very handy when both partners are trying to answer calls at the same time. You may share an office but you do not have to share every single conversation. Noise canceling headsets will enable you to make and receive your calls without worries of interrupting your partner or vice-versa.

Finally, don’t let your work life become your entire life. Plan a date night with your spouse where both of you get to enjoy each other’s company without worries of work or business. Take the time to do any errands that will need done prior to your date just so you are not worrying about them while you should be enjoying each other. If you both work from home it can become very easy to get caught up in work and simply sit in your office all day and half the night. Plan a night at least once a month or so when the two of you can get out and have some fun together.
